Right outside my window
In the first place we lived in the new town
My mother planted a magnolia tree

Where I could see it bloom
For that brief spring moment
Right outside my window

Years later, when I moved into our own first house, with you
I thought about my mother
And planted a magnolia tree

Where I could see it bloom
For that brief stretch of spring
Right outside my window

The first one died.
And I thought about my mother
And planted another magnolia tree

And lost that too, when you left
And I had to move to another house
Where I will not plant a magnolia tree
Right outside my window
