Here by the Lakes
In my snug suburban house
I read about the climate crisis on the web

Here by the Lakes
It’s not the pressing fear
Of floods or failed crops
Or towns destroyed
That I read about on the web

Here by the Lakes
In my snug suburban house
I water the garden early in the morning
And set the air conditioning to 80
Because I’m a responsible citizen

I eat the food I grow
In my snug suburban garden
And don’t worry about the grass
My car is gone and I grumble
then take the bus or walk,
Because I’m a responsible citizen

I always go to the climate march
Unless it’s raining
Or too hot
And I vote my conscience to help those people
With the failing crops and floods and decimated towns
Because I’m a responsible citizen.

But here by the Lakes
In my smug suburban house
With the garden and the rain barrels
And the empty garage,
It hasn’t rained since May.

  1. Oh, this was good Zan, this was a quick jab direct to the solar-plexus. The point this amplifies for me is the fear that if we wait until everyone has their own Incontrovertible evidence — it will be way too late.

  2. OH, I think that this is the most significant issue — unless it happens to all, it won’t get the traction it deserves. This speaks to me of our complacency. Very well penned!
