I went to the department store
To buy a dress for my son’s wedding
Even though I have one from resale.
But my friends convinced me
To buy a nice one, a new one
Like a grown up
From the high-end department store
Where I fit clothes four sizes smaller
Than the ones from Target or the mall.
Armored with my friend who knows clothes
We sorted through a half dozen
And I found one, and paid for it with my credit card
Like a grown up
I think I blended in
at this suburban store
Well-groomed white lady wearing nice clothes
(from the resale shop)
Like a grown up
I wonder if the salesperson could tell
What a fraud I am.
