These four walls shelter five small rooms
A garden surrounds it all
And I can sit in my living room
With sun streaming in, or autumn gloom
And see the garden wall

Or I’ll sit in the garden while neighbors walk by
But the garden fence is strong and tall
Sheltering me from the street so I
Don’t need to talk to the neighbors at all
Just me and my fence and my four walls

I long for conversation sometimes
But I don’t want to let anyone in
To my safe shelter so hard come by
The silence and peace and the absence of him
‘though I sometimes wonder in my solitary hide,
Am I sheltered, or just inside?
