I could just see dawn glowing
Through the neighbor’s trees
And imagine the liquid-metal lake
Gold, silver, mercury
Against the disappearing shore
Metal dawn gave way
To a sunflower morning-bright yellow
Casting shadows
Purple on the melting snow
By late morning the sun, still gamely glowing
Behind the high overcast
Turned the clear air white
The shadows gone
The world flat
Before the coming rain
