Christmas is seductive
In its unrelenting cheer
with the annual tropes
And constant retellings
Of stories and sellings
that everything you ever wanted is here
and children clamoring
not understanding
That it’s about somebody else’s god
And how do you tell them
That they can’t get candy canes
Santa or shows
Or presents, gobs and gobs
So you give in
Little by little
And put up your mother’s Christmas lights
And bake the cookies
And wrap the presents
And start understanding
Why your parents finally
Gave up the fight.
