Like stalking a lost lover
I let myself into the wild yard
The memories as overgrown as the plants

The walk had narrowed to a ribbon
The plants, monstrous, spidery, intruding
Like stalking a lost lover

I stood in the shadow of the neighbor’s tree
Debating whether to proceed
The memories as overgrown as the plants

The yard was haunted, bereft
Barely familiar wholly foreign
Like stalking a lost lover

The magnolia was gone, and the sheltered path
Beds reconstructed out of all recognition
The memories as overgrown as the plants

I felt vaguely ashamed
Inventing excuses in case I got caught
Like stalking a lost lover
The memories as overgrown as the plants

Where I lived #17: 2025 West Touhy, 31 to 60
