1
The last of the peppers
Glow as they turn red
against the dark soil
And shiny eggplants grow
Imperceptibly, black
In the waning length of the day
The garden hangs on
Through the early cold of October nights
A week, maybe two
From the first freeze
The gardener balancing
Against an early frost
The final harvest

2
Peppers turning red
I already lost the squash
To the hungry rats
