I wanted to have tea with my daughter
So we took off our masks
And sat in my living room chatting for an hour

I hate that I felt so unsafe
Watching her beautiful smile because
I just wanted to have tea with my daughter

Her animated face relating stories
That I don’t remember; that wasn’t the point
Of sitting in my living room chatting for an hour

She did what grown children do at mom’s house:
Raided the shelves and closets for childhood artifacts
The tea I had made growing cold in the mug

She’s getting tested tomorrow
Because she was with friends whom she doesn’t quite trust
Although we sat in my living room maskless, chatting for an hour

And this is where we are:
Risking our health
Because I wanted to have tea with my daughter
And sat in my living room chatting for an hour
