My high school had a deep front yard
Policed as such spaces will be
by teachers, passing traffic
and the looming edifice
with its broad steps
and haunted tower
A greensward, manicured
Watched, public.

But we had another space as well
Out front but separate
Across a narrow road
Our side of the mountain
Where we took care
Of ourselves
By ourselves
Calvin’s woods
Where we went rattling down
Each dangerous path with our Hobbes
And each other
Where no unsanctioned activity
Ever led us into real danger
Narnia, reached
Through a magic pavilion
Ringed by the respectable
Our portal
To independence
