We tried on personas
Like costumes
Hippies in jeans and macrame
The POW bracelet staying on our wrists
Through the costume change to
Booster in black and orange
Or scholars with black armbands
on tucked-in shirts
We summoned our tribes
In uniform
Choir robes and the oddly colored gowns
Of the madrigal singers
Cheerleaders, players, marching band
We were none of them
And all of them
Using each and every
All and none
To navigate out
and into the world

Edited into a sonnet:
We tried on personas like costumes
POW bracelet on our wrists
Through each successive costume change from
Hippies in jeans and macrame to
Booster in black and orange school colors
To scholars with black armbands
on tucked-in shirts
We summoned our tribes in uniform
Choir robes, candy stripers, fall play
The oddly colored gowns of the madrigal singers
Cheerleaders, players, marching band
We were none of them and all of them
Using each and every all and none
To navigate out and into the world
