This is not a candle’s light
Flicking in the pre-dawn dark
No tiny glow to push back night

Before the singing of the lark
Before the chill of early dawn
This is not a candle’s light

That says the night will not go on
The sun will rise as ever does
The subtling glow to vanquish night

Every night that ever was
Has always ended with the sun
This is not a candle’s light

Demanding darkness to be gone
As sun comes over the eastern rise
The weakest glow to push back night

Heralding day to opening eyes
Chariot drawn through brightening skies
This is not a candle pushing back night
Its weak glow fading to morning light

for the dverse prompt of 1/12/21: “this is not a”

    • thank you! I usually can’t pull of the rhyme scheme of a villanelle but this one fell right into place once I got the first line.

    • I’m an early riser, which means “in winter I get up at night” and yes, I light candles because I can’t bear the harsh electric that early.

  1. A non-candle villanelle! I love the idea of a ‘tiny glow to push back night’, Xan, and the lines:
    ‘Every night that ever was
Has always ended with the sun’.

    • Thanks Mish! I was staring at the lit candle in the very early morning when your jump-the-gun post went up 12 hours early! So then I had to write about (not) it.
