Every winter
I leave the faded flowers uncut
Their drying seed heads
Messy evidence
Of the summer just past
It means a little more work
Come springtime
When there’s already so much to do
And a little inconvenience
as the snow shovel catches
on the falling plants
But maybe it helped a bird
Get through the winter
