I planted trays of seeds
in March, as I always do
On special heated pads
In my unheated breezeway
The high hot sun
Heating the space in defiance
of the still cold air
Overnight the trays
Tented in plastic
Over the heated pads
Create a tiny humid summer
While dawn not quite freezing
Frosts the still dead grass
And as the morning frost
Gives way to daffodils
I move the trays outside
Then into the garden soil
Plant by tender plant
Until the frost returns
and first the garden,
then the breezeway
turn too cold
for anything but winter storage
until in March as I always do
I plant new trays of seeds

for the dverse prompt of 3/25/21: circle

    • Using the calendar as a circle metaphor felt like a bit of a cheat, but on the other hand when I’m not poetically whining about my sad sad memories, I’m writing about the garden, so I figure I’m excused.

  1. I like the pattern being repeated over and over here, though you came round inevitably to winter, you brought us back again to spring. I’m soaking up all the spring I can get right now!

  2. Your enjoyed your circle poem, Xan, which has reminded me to get cracking in the garden. My favourite lines:
    ‘Create a tiny humid summer
    While dawn not quite freezing
    Frosts the still dead grass
    And as the morning frost
    Gives way to daffodils’.
I love watching the little shoots develop leaves and become tender plants.
