Before the green of May and June emerge
From trees that still appear quite bare
The sun now shining warm through branches cold
In barely-out-of-winter air
Mid April all the early trees are blooming
Redtwig, cherry, magnolia blossom, pear
Bringing to my face a smile looming
In the early April morning gloaming
As I walk beneath their burdened branches
To think about my daughter and compare
The joy and fun she brings, the laughter
And sometimes annoyance, to be fair
My very own April blossom
Born with April blossoms in the air

  1. You’ve distilled April’s essence and steeped your words in it, Xan! I’m looking out of my windows and this is what I see:
‘The sun now shining warm through branches cold
    In barely-out-of-winter air’.
Although there are buds on our cherry, it is making us wait, a late bloomer, and the apple trees are even later, but we have some blossom on both quince and plum. A beautiful poem for your daughter. Please wish her a happy birthday from me!

    • Thank you, I will! (I posted this on her Facebook page, and I think she still hasn’t seen it. That’s the “annoyance” part lol)

  2. “As I walk beneath their burdened branches/To think about my daughter and compare/The joy and fun she brings,”.. this is so lovely, such a heart-stirring poem! I really hope she reads this 💝💝

    • Not looking forward to the snow they’ve predicted today, but I was hoping to focus on the joy, rather than the madness, in honor of my daughter’s birthday.
