Walking through a cool September morning
Past webs the spiders built up overnight
Breathing in the garden’s gentle dawning
As sunshine peeking through the leaves alights
Here at the edge of the troubled city
In my peaceful garden I can choose
To ignore at least for this one morning the troubling news
I pretend that I am far, here, from the fires burning
From the marching, from the crying souls
Far from desperate women, desperate families
Here there is no struggle to behold
Here there is no ill wind, no fell signs
As I calmly pick the last tomatoes
And ignore the dire times

  1. Yes Xan, heartfelt and well expressed… We all have to keep that level of self knowing and compassion around us and still stay calm and nourished somehow … Its tough, thankyou for a thoghtful and honest write.

    • Thank you. It was inspired by a friend’s prompt “in these dire times” and I was looking for that guilty contradiction that is the intersection of awareness and privilege.

  2. The news can be so unsettling at times .. I personally try to avoid indulging in it but stay updated at the same time. Especially resonate with; “Here at the edge of the troubled city/In my peaceful garden I can choose/To ignore at least for this one morning the troubling news/I pretend that I am far.”💝
